my bag on the sartorialist...

could you imagine my excitment this afternoon when i hopped onto the sartorialist's blog to see my jil sander market acetate bag featured in one of his posts. i love the way she is wearing it, it really pops against her all black outfit. i love her mix of high and low, the juxtaposition of the opulent fur with the high-top velcro sneaker, and don't get me started on her hair, a-mazing...

the amazing ms. wintour

welcome to the family...

look at what arrived in the mail for me today...

it's the jil sander market acetate bag that i featured in my last post, which, for me, was one of the stand-out accessories of the spring/summer 2011 collections. not because it is flashy or even that pretty, but it makes a statement. it's so pedestrian, but the fabrication, colour and ease of it make it super-appealing.

i ordered it off 'net-a-porter' last thursday and it arrived at the post office this morning... which i have to say is amazing, considering it came from 'net-a-porter's' headquarters in london, and over the weekend. it was such a treat to un-wrap, all done up with monogrammed ribbon, then inside, was a little dust-bag, inside it, was a tape measure [monogrammed, of course] and a pamphlet to fill in with all your measurements, such a great idea, easy to refer to when making your next purchase. then came the best bit, the jil sander dust-bag which held my precious... ...as featured in 'bazaar collections, spring 2011 edition' ...me and my jil sander market acetate bag ...getting artsy ... and with the rest of my birthday presents, BOOKS, 'i-d covers: 1980-2010,' 'prada,' 'backstage dior' and 'tom ford' ...as featured on the jil sander spring 2011 runway in milan, 25th september 2010 shot by jak & jil's tommy ton during milan fashion week, february 2011

just a thought...

...could you imagine joseph altuzarra at dior. i think he could really take it on. looking again at his recent fall 2011 collection, there are elements of his work that are reminders of earlier work john did at dior [even nicole phelps said that in her review for style.com/]...

when you look at what he has done himself in 5 seasons, his precision, his technique, his unwavering vision for a season, and just his polish, its astounding, imagine what he could do with all the resources that dior have at their disposal. so far established names like hedi slimane, ricardo tisci, alver elbaz and stefano pilati have all been thrown around. all of them doing amazing things at their own houses, all of them capturing the spirit of their houses all while moving their brands forward, it would be a shame to mess with that. plus with altuzarra, you would be getting fresh eyes, a young perspective, many people would argue with me on this, that although what john was doing at dior was beautiful, it was in some ways was just that, beautiful. in recent years, i feel we had lost the spectacle, the drama, the unknown, from john's shows at dior.

the above images were taken from galliano's spring 2004 collection for dior, these looks are shocking, unexpected and brash, with loads of personality, something that i feel has been missing in recent seasons. that sense of fun and ridiculousness that makes dressing up fun.

and these looks are from galliano's fall 2003 collection for dior. again these looks are completely over-the-top and insane, brilliant. this may be a good opportunity, although the circumstances are less the desirable, to bring in some fresh talent and perhaps a new perspective, one that is more modern and in tune with the time... something for you to think about mr. toledano

what do you know...

i didn't even realise til just now, i've clocked over six thousand visitors. imagine how many more would visit if i updated more regularly...

just to let you know, it is my birthday in 12 days, woo hoo. when this...

...is back in stock on net-a-porter, i am going to treat myself to it.

best dressed, hands down...

so in my new house, i have no foxtel, sad, it was either get the internet or foxtel, no brainer, the internet prevailed. not the point, my parents do have foxtel, so i went home this morning to watch the oscars red carpet live on e! overall, i was kind of underwhelmed. everyone looked good, but no-one really blew me away. jennifer lawrences' body was banging in her calvin klein. mila kunis looked beautiful in her lavender elie saab gown, but i think that was part of the problem with everyone, everyone looked great, but there were no real surprises. i guess in all essence the oscars red carpet is not the place to be shocking. but sometimes the viewer needs a little jolt to keep interested. anyway, rambling again. my jolt came when i saw cate blanchett wearing givenchy spring 2011 couture. my jaw dropped and i sat upright in my seat. she looked stunning, completely unfussy, minimal jewellery [by van cleef & arpels], fresh, dewy skin and un-styled hair, yet she blew everyone else out of the water. she just has this regal presence, which is probably her best asset on the red carpet. the dress was stunning enough as it is, but with cate inside, it just came to life...

just a little side-note. isn't it funny that the best dressed women at last years and this years oscars both wore lavender coloured spring couture givenchy. ricardo tisci definitely has a way about him.

desert flower

a bit behind the times, i know, but yesterday, i had the pleasure of seeing 'desert flower' which stars model liya kebede. i wasn't quite sure what to expect, having not read the best-selling book of the same name, but i knew the basic story. the story of a girl fleeing africa to make a better life for herself. i also knew that she was circumcised when she was very young. what i really wasn't expecting was the brutal depiction of said circumcision. it was a heart-wrenching scene, that would've made the strongest of stomachs, churn. the horror of waris drie', the protaganist of this story, early life is mirrored in the movie by her eventual success as an inernational model. this fact was one of the reasons i wanted to see this movie. this picture marks liya kebede's big-screen debut, a model herself, her depiction of waris was heart-felt, strong, endearing and when required, light-hearted and down right funny. i could rave on forever about how much i loved this movie. i look forward to its release on dvd, it is definitely a film i will be adding to my collection. for anyone who hasn't seen desert flower, i strongly suggest you do, although it is a tragic story, it is a beautiful movie, very colourful, in both setting and its characters. i left the cinema glowing, that's how much liked. i felt that even though what happened to waris in her early life, her experience made her a better person later in life.

and to link this post a little further to fashion. here is tom ford's final collection for gucci. you can see liya kebede at work at 2 minutes and 17 seconds and again from 3 minutes and 30 seconds where she is on screen for 5 seconds. her purple look is one of my first real high-fashion memories. stunning.

how easily we forget...

that at the start of this millenium victoria beckham was at the start of what could've been a successful solo career, had it not been for kylie's 'can get you out of my head,' victoria could still possibly be releasing music. many people would cringe at the idea, but i don't think that it would've been such a bad thing. but luckily for the fashion industry and many a female a-lister, a burgeoning solo music career was not on the cards for victoria. instead, she has turned her hand at design and isn't showing any sign of slowing down, expect to have a baby that is [hopefully a girl, how will ever inherit all those birkins?...]. her fashion empire is going from strength to strength and slowly expanding every season, with spring 2011 seeing the introduction of some very chic handbags. her line is stocked in only the most exclusive shopping addresses around the world and on-line at net-a-porter, where look 1 from her spring 2011 collection, worn by lindsey wixon is now avaliable

tom ford's quiet return to the red carpet

how refreshing... taking the least obvious route, tom ford dressed best actress in a comedy nominee annette bening in look 26, a black velvet silk fil coupe gown from his debut spring 2011 collection. i love that he has stayed true to his word, and not dressed the obvious 20 something starlet, instead opting to dress annette, who truely beams and brings the dress to life, bravo tom, bravo annette...

jumping out of my seat...

presenting, the lanvin spring-summer 2011 ad campaign... it put a huge smile on my face when i saw the first image, then scrolling down the images i couldn't help but jump around in my seat... this is what i love about fashion, unabashed fun and frivolity, not taking oneself too seriously.
